About ASR Library
Our Mission
ASR Library exists to make ASL video content accessible to the DeafBlind community through community-driven transcripts.
ASL videos are a vital part of Deaf culture and communication, but they remain inaccessible to DeafBlind individuals who cannot see the signing. By creating high-quality transcripts of ASL video content, we bridge this gap and ensure everyone can access this valuable content.
Our Approach
Accessibility First
This website is built with WCAG AAA accessibility standards in mind. We use semantic HTML, high contrast colors, clear typography, and ensure all functionality works with screen readers and braille displays.
Community Driven
Anyone can submit videos that need transcripts. Community contributors create the transcripts, and stewards verify quality. This collaborative model ensures the library grows organically based on community needs.
Multiple Transcript Styles
We offer different transcript styles to meet different needs:
- Verbatim: Word-for-word gloss of signing
- Cleaned: Verbatim with filler removed for readability
- Summary: Key points and main ideas
- Meaning-for-Meaning: Conceptual translation preserving intent
- Podcast Style: Narrative format for listening
Creator Respect
We always link to original videos and credit creators. Transcripts complement rather than replace the original content, encouraging engagement with creators' platforms.
Privacy & Ethics
We take privacy seriously:
- No tracking or analytics that identify users
- Client-side search that doesn't send queries to servers
- Minimal data collection - only what's needed
- Transparent, open-source codebase
Technical Approach
ASR Library is built as a static site for speed, reliability, and accessibility:
- Eleventy: Static site generator for fast page loads
- Netlify: Hosting with serverless functions
- Supabase: Database for video and transcript data
- No JavaScript Required: Core functionality works without JS
The entire project is open source. View on GitHub
